After many years in TV and film, director Mark Reyes can rightfully add horror to his list of specializations or genres. Mark is directing Regal Entertainment’s “Tiyanaks,” which stars Rica Peralejo, Jennylyn Mercado, Mark Herras, JC de Vera, Ryan Yllana, Jill Yulo, Alwyn Uytingco, Karel Marquez, Andrei Felix, TJ Trinidad, Nash Aguas Mika dela Cruz and Lotlot de Leon.
Direk Mark says, “It’s my first horror movie. ‘Tiyanaks’ is an eerie creature feature that has a truly Asian horror flavor.” Known for his work on romantic, youth-oriented and fantasy TV shows and films, he’s glad to be given a chance to scare viewers. He’s partial to horror movies that rely on good old traditional “pananakot,” as opposed to blood and gore. Direk Mark enumerates, “My favorite horror movies are classics like ‘The Shinning’ and ‘Exorcist.’ Modern ones are ‘What Lies Beneath’ and ‘Sixth Sense.’ In Asian horror, I like ‘The Ring’ and ‘Shutter.’”
When Regal’s Roselle Monteverde, Manny Valera and Mother Lily Monteverde pitched a horror movie about the tiyanak, Direk Mark was thrilled. After talking further, the idea of having three tiyanaks in one movie was conceived. He says, “Sino ba namang director ang di gugustuhin ang ganong scenario? Sabi ko gusto kong tatlo ang mga tiyanak para I could intercut from land to the air to the water.
“Ang mga tiyanak dito extraordinary. Iyong water tiyanak, nagsi-swimming. The land tiyanak runs so fast in the woods. Ang air tiyanak, parang mananaggal.”
But Direk Mark assures that the tiyanaks are not the only scary elements in the movie. “Maraming surprises dito ang mga cast. Aabangan ng tao kung paano matatakasan ng barkada ang mga tiyanak o kung may makakatakas ba.”
